When you install wordpress, it comes with widgets, when you install a new theme it comes with widget areas and when you install certain plugins, these will be widgets too and you can assign all of your widgets to widget areas withing your theme very easily. A widget may be a blog archive section on your sidebar or possibly a slideshow on your front page, most of these things are displayed via widget areas. This tutorial will just simply show you how to add a widget to an assigned area.
To access your widgets and widget area go to your admin panel and on the left click Appearance > Widgets.
On the page that opens up, you will see your widgets on the left hand side and your widget areas on the right hand side.
Assigning Widgets To Areas
If you want to assign a blog archive to your side bar so it shows up on the sidebar of your blog or website, drag the archives widget area into “Primary Sidebar” (this may have a different name on different themes but this is just an example.
If you like, give your widget a name such as Blog Archives then hit save. Your widget will now show up on your main blog page (If theme settings are set to show a sidebar.)
This tutorial is just an example of how to add widgets, different themes call for different widget areas and have different settings, but all widgets that need assigned to areas should be assigned the same way as shown in this tutorial.
